As she neared the bottom of the dip in Piccadilly she saw a woman approaching her from the opposite direction—a tall woman who at the first glance seemed altogether beautiful and fine. She had a political cartoon from 1785 that showed a tall man in a cape, a caricature of a French politico that looked suspiciously like him. Abruptly the sterner look vanished and she twinkled. "You repeated the word 'Fool' over and over. It is no good. He had not addressed to her even the most ordinary courtesy of fellow travellers; she doubted that he was even aware of her existence.
